Alyson Marlow

After a hectic 2002 co-driver Alyson Marlow is still finalising plans for 2003 - but the year will start on the Rallye Sunseeker with husband Innes in the driving seat of their Evo IV.

Any other hobbies? rabbits -Tommi and Burnsie live in the house, gardening and collecting teapots, going to the gym.

Favourite food: pasta
Favourite drink: ** Fruit tea
Favourite sports person (other than rallying): Sir Steven Redgrave – what a great advert for motivation
Favourite holiday destination: What are holidays? At the moment Cyprus but love Scotland and Wales.
Which TV sports programmes do you watch? Whatever Innes has on the TV – usually football or motorsport

Type of licence held: Rally International
Which motor club do you belong to? Southsea Motor Club (southseamotorclub.co.uk)
Do you contribute towards your rallying? Much of the funds have been out of the family pot in the past but now pay in terms of experience and PR work
Have you ever driven on a rally? Only once – the Goodwood Stages organised by Southsea Motor Club with Innes co-driving. We decided it was best to stick with what we knew best!
Did you ever marshal on events? When and where? Marshal on some Southsea Motor Club Events
How many events do you get to watch? (e.g. per year) If not competing I try to get to British Rally events and a couple of WRC rallies each year – I need a regular fix.
How many rallies do you take part in? (e.g. per year) ** Varies. 2002 was a busy year with 206 Super Cup, Network Q and some smaller tarmac events.
Have you competed abroad? Where and when?

** Canada last year - Rallye Charlevoix. Great experience co-driving for Pat Richard in a works Subaru after he had sealed the Canadian Championship but dreadful rally. Retired on the first stage!! 

In 2001 I did the Portuguese round of the WRC – in those terrible conditions with stepson Dan – What a baptism of fire.

Favourite rally car: The sound of a Subaru
Favourite rally driver: Ari and Gwyndaf
Favourite rally co-driver: ** Nicky Grist – A real inspiration when I started co-driving and a great guy.
Favourite bit of road or forest: The final corner on any rally.
Do you prefer pace notes or map reading events? Pace notes
Things you dislike about rallying? Retiring from events – it never gets any easier.
Who do you think will win the World Rally Championship in 2002? Marcus Gronholm

Rallying history  
Drivers you have sat with: In competition - Innes Marlow, Dan Marlow, Barbara Armstrong, Steve Hendy, Jenny Hibbert, Andrea Hall, Mandy Twynham, Pat Richard and variety of Ford guest drivers in the Kas.

For work!! – Colin McRae, Richard Burns, Tommi Makinen, Ari Vatanen, Gwyndaf Evans, Alister McRae, Roger Clark, Carlos Sainz, Juha Kankkunen, Armin Schwarz, Justin Dale…….hard life eh!

Best driver you have ever sat with?  Ari – just so cool.
Best result: ** World Cup Rally 2nd overall
Network Q 1999 40th overall and Media Award
2002 Network Q 36th overall
Worst result: ** Retiring a mile into the Jim Clark Memorial Rally and retiring on the last stage of the Scottish in 2002 after leading the 206 Super Cup from the start!
Championships contested: ** Always tend to mix and match but enjoyed the 206 Super Cup. Also plenty of BRC and ANCRO events.
Best rally memory: The last two corners of my first Network Q Rally.
Strangest incident on a rally: Being stranded in floods in Morocco where it hadn’t rained for seven years. 
Biggest accident:

** Had a few incidents in 2002 with Pat Richard on a steep curve to learn 2WD, right hand drive and pace notes.

Bad roll in Scotland and plenty of body damage to the car in Le Touquet.

Achievements gained from rallying: I can now read a map! organisational skills, learnt to keep calm in all situations and made some great friends. 
Your current performance  
Your current driver(s) and events or Championships being contested in 2002 206 Super Cup with Canadian Pat Richard
.... and in 2003? *Nothing planned beyond the Rallye Sunseeker with Innes who is coming out of retirement for our local event. Looking for offers at the moment…..
How could you improve your ‘own’ current performance? ** Become better at maths rather than repeating timing calculations because numbers have never been my strong point!
How could you improve your current driver’s performance? ** Let them get more experience in their cars.
If you had £50,000 to spend on rallying, what would you do?  Dan and I would go rallying around the world.
Your future in rallying  
Where would you most like to compete (in the world): ** I'd love to go back to Canada.
Which rally would you most like to compete in? A Network Q which wants privateers
Which driver(s) would you most like to co-drive for? Dan – just like his dad, but faster!
Ambition in rallying for the future: ** To keep co-driving
What would you like to put back into rallying? Encourage people to take part and get them to realise that it is possible.
The future of rallying  
Which up-and-coming rally driver can you recommend? ** I would like to see Justin Dale make his mark on WRC
What would be the best tip you could give to other co-drivers? Enjoy the sport
