Bryan Hull, top British co-driver
Photo of me taken by Simon Clarke on the Mewla National 2002 with Dave Carruthers.

Something to keep children away from the fire or to put with my  profile. I guess male modelling is out of the question as a future career?  I hope you can use it.  If not, I'll find one of Brad Pitt.

Personal
Name: Bryan Hull
Age: ****** 30 something
Marital status: Single
Children: No
Place of birth: Reading, Berkshire
Country or county where you live: Reading, Berkshire (I like to travel)
Does your spouse / partner like rallying? ****** She’ll watch it on TV but not so keen on a cold wet mountain side
Any other hobbies? ****** Visiting places of interest and reading anything and everything from a bus time table to a politician's autobiography
Your opinions
Favourite food: Thai
Favourite drink: Leffe Belgian Beer
Favourite motorsport paper / magazine: **** Have stopped buying Motorsport News and prefer the web
Favourite sports person (other than rallying): ****** It’s now Lewis Hamilton, shame we haven’t got someone that talented in rallying
Favourite film star: Steve McQueen
Favourite holiday destination ****** Have enjoyed a few days on the beach in Aqaba in Jordan and spent time in Barbados and now been to Las Vegas so learning what it is to go on holiday
Which TV sports programmes do you watch? ****** The girlfriend has Sky so watch any rallying I can on that as well as the WRC highlights programme on ITV4 (really should get Sky or cable but it took me long enough to get a freeview box)
Starting out
How did you start out? Was dragged along to a meeting of Craven Motor Club kicking and screaming one night and soon started marshalling and servicing for my new mates in the club and it went downhill from there
First driver you sat with: Darren Cooksey, the guy who introduced me to Craven; no idea why he asked me to co-drive.
First event: Azimughr Stages at Colerne in Wiltshire in a Mk2 Escort on very worn Colways. We spent the whole event going sideways and I was hooked. Met my next driver at the same event and never looked back
Rallying background
Type of licence held: International
Which motor club do you belong to? Craven Motor Club ****** 1400 Rally Club and F1000
Do you contribute towards your rallying? Not financially
Have you ever driven on a rally? Drove the Course Car at the Carfax Stages at Longcross in 2001. Hated it - won't repeat the experience.
Did you ever marshal on events? When and where?

****** I try to put something back into the sport if it’s only a bit of time. I’ve been marshaling on Mull for over 10 years and I officiate at my club's events and other local rallies when not competing myself

How many events do you get to watch? (e.g. per year) ****** Not a fan of watching I prefer to take part or marshal. I can watch rallying on TV though
How many rallies do you take part in? (e.g. per year)

Approximately 10 rallies a year
**** Managed 19 in 2003
***** Only 10 events competitively in 2004 but have done a couple of Course Car jobs

Have you competed abroad? Where and when? ****** Belgian many times and now, thanks to this website, Sweden, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Jordan. I’ve been to Barbados twice for the Rally Carnival but not had a great finishing rate - crashed as Course Car and had to retire and restart in the Trophy Rally on my second visit.
Your opinions (rallying)
Favourite rally car: 205T16
Favourite rally driver: Juha Kankkunen
Favourite rally co-driver: Howard Davies
Favourite bit of road or forest: The final road section to the final control
Do you prefer pace notes or map reading events? Pace notes but we shouldn't stop using maps
Things you dislike about rallying? The cost and the fact nobody stood at the side of the stage knows who’s winning
Who do you think will win the World Rally Championship in 2002? My heart says Burnsie but my head says Marcus Gronholm
... and in 2003? ** Gronholm but I'd like it to be Burnsie
... and in 2004? **** I'd like it to be Solberg again but I think Martin may take it

Best driver you have ever sat with? ** Jari-Matti Latvala even though it was only practising pacenote writing with him.  Quickest in a rally car is still David Higgins, if only testing.
Best result: Winning F1400 and N1 on the Rallye Sunseeker on my birthday
***** 4th O/A at Sweet Lamb
Worst result: Crashing on the Manx in 1999 - apparently I called the corner late!
Championships contested: Sussex Challenge, ACSMC Tarmac, BTRDA, ANCRO and BRC, *** Welsh Clubmans, ANWCC Forestry ****** Evo Challenge, Skoda Trophy, Peugeot 206 Cup, Fiesta Sporting Trophy
Best Championship result: ANCRO F1400 and N1 Co-driver 2001 (a strange year)
***** and in 2004 winning 2ltr class in both ANWCC and Welsh Clubmans Championships
Best rally memory: They are all good memories
Strangest incident on a rally: A Goat-herder pulling out of the desert in his pick-up truck, with two goats in the back, in front of Tom Ryan and I as we were heading for the flying finish on the penultimate stage of the Midnight Sun to Red Sea Rally. All we could see were goats’ backsides!
Biggest accident:

Rolled on the Pirelli in 1999

**** My accident in Barbados now takes this honour, crashed heavily into a bridge parapet and wrote a Suzuki Ignis off and broke my middle finger, which I didn't discover for 3 months.

Achievements gained from rallying: Lots of friends **** and a lot of uninteresting information
Your current performance
Your current driver(s) and events or Championships being contested in 2002 Registered for the BTRDA but am doing bits and pieces with different drivers
... and in 2003? ** This year I'll be contesting ANWCC and Welsh Clubmans with Duncan Goldsmith and bits and pieces with other drivers.
... and in 2004? **** I'm registered for BTRDA, ANCRO, Evo Challenge, Welsh Clubmans and ANWCC.

Am contesting the last two championships with Duncan Goldsmith once again and bits and pieces with James Morton. I am open to offers for my free weekends!

... and in 2005? ***** Welsh Clubmans and ANWCC again and open to interesting offers
How could you improve your ‘own’ current performance? More events. Time in the car is as important for a co-driver as it is for a driver but also I must get fitter *** and also keep to my diet and fitness plan.
How could you improve your current driver’s performance? More time in the car
If you had £50,000 to spend on rallying, what would you do? Being selfish, I'd keep it and rally every weekend and spend the weekdays planning events, or I'd use it to find the next Richard Burns.
Your future in rallying
Where would you most like to compete (in the world): ****** Still looking for new challenges and I would love to do another long distant event or on off road rally, sounds like the Paris Daker to me!  .
Which rally would you most like to compete in? The WRC events I would like to do are Corsica, Finland and Australia
Which driver(s) would you most like to co-drive for? The next European/Asia Pacific/Middle East/ World Champion
Ambition in rallying for the future: To do more rallying abroad and maybe get a job in the sport
What would you like to put back into rallying? I want to help people to continue to discover and enjoy our sport in whatever capacity they wish to, whether that is as a Spectator, Marshal, Organiser or Competitor
The future of rallying
Which up-and-coming rally driver can you recommend? **** Stuart Jones
Which up-and-coming rally co-driver can you recommend? ME
What would be the best tip you could give to other co-drivers?  Enjoy it, don't take life too seriously, get in a rally car as often as you can and Marshal events to put something back into the sport, as without Marshals we can't compete.
Any other comments I have made many good friends through rallying; this I believe is the friendly sport and long may it continue so.

2005 - so far!

Well, I'm another year older but no wiser.

I've managed to notch up 8 events so far this year without even trying and I think there are a few more to come.

I kicked off the year with the Red Kite with Frank McDonnell, a driver on his first-ever gravel event. It was also only his second-ever rally and so the result of 25th overall and 6th in class was awesome.

Next I was out on the Winter Stages with Duncan Goldsmith. We finished 9th overall and 2nd in class and I had the hangover from hell on the Sunday as it was my birthday; oh, and Duncan proposed to his girlfriend Nicola.

Into March and yet another new driver to me in the shape of Laurie Beestone and we took part in the Rally of Kent. We rolled in his Mk 2 on the penultimate stage but we managed to finish the event despite losing a hell of time while the car stayed on its roof.

April and I'm back in with Duncan in a hired Mk 2 from JoneSport. This is an event we both love but not in 2005 as we ended up retiring with a broken driveshaft. At the end of the month another new driver and my second Irishman of the year as I'm out with Jonni McDaid in a 1400 Peugeot 206 on the Welsh International and we bring the car home in one piece for a 4th in class and 22nd overall.

May is a busy month as I'm Deputy Clerk of the Course on the Thames Valley Motorsport Stages and then the weekend after I'm back out with Laurie Beestone and my second DNF of the year. Three days later I'm leaving on a jet plane for Rally Barbados.

My second visit to the island and this time I'm competing rather than crashing in the Course Car. I'm in with Andrew Costin-Hurley on his third visit to the island. I'd not met Andrew before I left for the island so it was just like one of my usual turn-up-and-jump-in rides except I travelled over 4,000 miles to do it. We broke a driveshaft on SS1 and this put us out of the event for the rest of the day.

The car was repaired overnight and we competed on the Trophy Rally, bringing Andrew's RWD Puma home in 4th place, first European on this consolation rally. The car is the sexiest I've sat in.

To bring things up to date; I wa out with Frank McDonnell on the Mid Wales Stages in his Impreza and we finished 20th overall and 8th in class.

Looking to the future; the Swansea Bay is in the diary and hopefully the remaining ANCRO rounds and some bits and pieces as ever.

A quiet year, relatively speaking....
Review of 2004

A quiet 2004, relatively speaking, for me with only about 10 competitive outings with a smaller than usual selection of drivers but, saying that, I have managed to win my class in two regional championships being the 2 litre class-winning co-driver in both the ANWCC and Welsh Clubmans Forestry Championships - both won sitting alongside Duncan Goldsmith. More of the same in 2005 in a hired Mk2 Escort from Jones Sport.

Other outings have been limited to sitting beside Mike Oates in his S9 Scooby WRC at the Abingdon Carnival and Abi Mahmood in his Grp A Sunny GTi at a event at Longcross. I have also sat beside one of my longest-standing partners, James Morton. We had planned to contest the whole of the Evo Challenge but due to my commitments in the Escort and then a shortfall on budget our year fell short.

During 2004 the MSA fitness scheme ended but my visits to the gym certainly haven't. In fact I'm probably fitter now than when the scheme was running as I can see the benefits and so am working harder at it.

In 2005 as well as contesting the Welsh Clubman's and ANWCC I hope to be doing ANCRO as I have been approached by a couple of drivers but until my bum is in the car on the start line I won't count my chickens and so am open for offers as usual.

December 2004

Seven events down, and still counting....
latest during 2004

Year kicked off with the Red Kite on the 4th of January with Duncan Goldsmith in his Mk II, a really foggy event but not as icy as the previous year but once again Craven's Colin Minton and Peter Henness had their 'off' caught on camera. If you see the video of the event you even see Peter turning the page of the notes during the accident - late call?

Onto February and it's Rallye Sunseeker and it sees the return to the competitive driving seat of James Morton in his recently-acquired Evo 6. The rally ran in freak snowy conditions and was an interesting challenge. We booked into the very first control 6 minutes late and then the car kept cutting out in the arrival control of the first stage due to a badly placed ECU. Every time I moved my feet the car stopped; I think the ECU has now been moved.

Nothing doing in March except navigating the Course Opening car for Peter Henness on the Swan Rally and attending an MSA Marshals' Training day.

April and it's the Astra Stages and I'm back with Duncan and my first 'off' of the year when we have a rally-ruining-but-no-car-hurting 'off' on SS2. James was also doing the event and covered a bit more mileage before retiring in service wanting to save the car from an unknown engine problem.

Into May and it's Craven's rally at Longcross and I've got the top job for the first time as CoC. I think we can say the event was a success as we had no injuries and all stages ran without delay. Well done and thanks to everyone for their help and support.

The following week it's the Red Dragon and I'm once again with Duncan and we have an almost faultless rally except for a couple of big spins on the last stage when trying to make up time on our class leaders. Oh, and I broke a rib but not on stage - on a road section, bizarre!

Now we're into June and I'm lucky enough to have been asked to sit with Mike Oates in his Subaru Impreza S9 at the Abingdon Carnival. The car is awesome and I feel very privileged to have been asked and thank both Mike and Bill Gwynne for the opportunity as not many people get the chance to plant their bums in such modern ex-works machinery. Boy, can it accelarate and stop.

As I write this I'm due to compete at Longcross with Abi Mahmood in his Nissan Sunny on Sunday the 27th of June and I have a confirmed entry on the Swansea Bay with James in July and an entry form in the post for the Coracle Rally with Duncan in August.

Bryan takes on his biggest challenge yet!
2004 begins
I've been a bit quiet this year as a bit disillusioned with the sport at the moment and I hope something will rekindle my interest but not sure what that will be.

I've only managed to co-drive 4 times so far in 2004 so not sure I will beat my 2003 total of 19, but the events so far have been the Red Kite with Duncan in the Mk 2, the Sunseeker with James Morton then back out with Duncan at Sweet Lamb and the Astra Clubmans.

This weekend sees me take the step up to being the Clerk of the Course of the Brook Motor Sport Stages at Longcross, a role I've not had before as only having been a deputy previously and it feels like my biggest challenge yet. I hope it all goes well. The following weekend it's the Red Dragon with Duncan.

Not sure how the rest of the year will pan out but I'm sure I'll do more as the year progresses and my list of drivers and events will continue to grow.

You may have read in Motor Sports Now about my fitness training? Well that's moving forward and whereas I may not be the racing snake that my trainer wants I'm 10 times fitter. The pounds are not dropping off as I'd like but the inches are, as my fat is turning to muscle (or so I hope!) and I seem to have more energy. Maybe it'll make me a better co-driver?
