An experienced co-driver often provides a stabilising influence on a young
driver attempting to make his mark at the highest level in rallying and
Jean-Marc Fortin has been the guiding hand
alongside fellow Belgian Francois Duval in both their Ford Puma and Focus
RS programmes in the world championship.
After beginning his career in 1988, Fortin first made his mark in the
sport in 1991 when he teamed up with Marc Soulet to tackle the
Belgian Championship in a Ford Sierra Cosworth. The pair won the Rallye
Wallonie and the following season victories in the Bianchi and Omloop
rallies enabled Fortin to claim the Belgian co-drivers title.
After a quiet two seasons, Fortin linked up with fellow countryman
Gregoire de Mevius in 1995 in the official Nissan works team. The
pair tackled the British Championship in a Sunny and finished third, helping
Nissan take the manufacturers title. They also competed on several
world championship events for the team.
The pair moved up to four-wheel drive machinery in 1996 for a concerted
campaign in the Belgian International Championship at the wheel of a Ford
Escort Cosworth. Wins on the Boucles de Spa and Flanders rallies ensured
a second co-drivers title for Fortin and the pair were also victorious
on the non-championship Bianchi Rally.
Their successful partnership continued for another two seasons on a mixture
of Belgian and world championship rallies, first in a Ford Escort and
then in a Subaru Impreza. They finished fourth on the Rally of Portugal
and seventh on the Acropolis Rally in 1997 and fourth on the RAC Rally
and eighth in Portugal the following season.
In 1999 Fortin formed a new partnership with Polands Krzysztof
Holowczyc. They tackled the FIA Teams Cup in the world championship
and also the Polish Championship, which they won after four rally victories.
They returned to the Teams Cup in 2000 and took category honours on the
Swedish Rally.
In 2001 Fortin joined Francois Duval for the FIA Super 1600 Championship
in a Ford Puma. They were always quick but did not enjoy the results their
speed deserved. Second on the Sanremo Rally was their best performance.
Last year Fortin partnered Duval in both the Junior World Rally Championship
in a Puma and five world championship events in a Focus RS World Rally
Car. Victory in the Puma in the JWRC category in Monte Carlo provided
a superb start to the season and the pair displayed their potential for
all to see in the Focus, as well as gaining crucial experience of more
championship rounds which will benefit them hugely in 2003.
Away from rallying, Fortin is a keen sportsman and enjoys skiing and squash.
