Michael
Park, one of the world's top co-drivers, has died as a result
of injuries sustained in an accident on stage 15 on the final
leg of Wales Rally GB 2005. As co-driver to Markko Martin,
'Beef', as Park was affectionately known, enjoyed considerable
success with the Estonian during three seasons at Ford before
switching to Peugeot for 2005.
Park
had been a rally enthusiast since childhood, "I
watched a road rally go past my house when I was about 10
years old. Then, as soon as I was old enough to drive,
I was off to the local Motor Club to see what it was all about."
Prior
to being a co-driver, he used to be involved with what was
then called the RAC Rally in a unique job that he himself
described this past week. "I used to work as coordinator
for a number of teams and my job included recceing the route
to find the best service locations and marking up hundreds
of maps. It was fun, but also very tiring."
Michael's
first event as a co-driver was for Andy Gwynne on the 1986
Hereford Novices Road Rally.
He
also gained experience with some of Britain's top talents,
working with former world champions Richard Burns and Colin
McRae as a gravel note expert while co-driving for both David
Higgins and Mark Higgins in the British Rally Championship.
His big break, however, came when he teamed up with Markko
Martin as privateers in a Toyota Corolla for the 2000 World
Rally Championship season.
In
2001, Michael told us about his rallying ambitions, "To
get Markko Martin into a factory car and compete in the WRC
at the highest level."
And
so he did! That same year, after a string of impressive performances,
they were signed up by Subaru. "Michael
was a member of our team in 2001 and, as part of the WRC family,
he remained a close friend to all of us at Subaru," commented
David Lapworth, Subaru team principal.
The
two then moved to Ford in 2002 taking two wins in Greece and
Finland, and a further three in 2004. Ford's team director,
Malcolm Wilson said, "During three seasons with Ford,
Michael became part of the family. His ever-cheerful and vibrant
personality, even in the most adverse of circumstances, frequently
lightened the tense atmosphere that often surrounds the WRC
service park.
"He
was rarely seen without a smile on his face and that's the
way I will remember him. He learned his trade as a navigator
and co-driver on local rallies and his path to the top of
the sport was the result of nothing less than hard work."
Michael
and Markko were lying fourth in this year's WRC title race
after securing four podiums in a season dominated by Citroen's
Sebastien Loeb. Their performances had been instrumental in
Peugeot's challenge for the manufacturer's championship, with
the team lying six points behind French rivals Citroen.
Michael
loved his work, ""Markko masters the subtleties
of the English language perfectly. He even gets my jokes!
The pacenote system we use today is based on the British system
with the odd word of Estonian every now and again. Another
feature of the way we work is that Markko asks me not to talk
too quickly when calling out the notes, and that can come
across as being a bit of a drone. Whenever I watch onboard
TV footage, I don't like the impression I get that my voice
is slow or that I call out the notes at the last moment. But
it works for my driver and that's the main thing!"
Ford's
team director Malcom Wilson called Michael "the ultimate
professional" and he was clearly appreciated by his fellow
WRC competitors. At the end of Rally GB 2005 Colin McRae said,
"We have had a sad end to the rally with the death of
Michael Park. He was one of the championship's real characters,
and a really genuine person."
Skoda
team leader, Armin Schwarz, who will retire from the FIA World
Rally Championship at the end of this season, said, "I
am absolutely shocked and shattered. I would like to express
my deep felt compassion for his wife and his two children.
Michael was a good friend and a fabulous colleague of mine.
I am deeply sad."
Michael
is survived by wife Marie and children William and Victoria.
Everyone at rallycodriver sends our condolences to Michael's
friends and family.

Park 'Beef' Trophy |
On September 18th 2005, Michael PARK ('Beef'), Markko MARTIN’s co-driver, was killed in a tragic accident during the Wales Rally GB.
The WRC world misses his honesty, simplicity and his joy for life.
A group of his friends and colleagues have decided to perpetuate his memory by creating the Michael Park 'Beef' Trophy.
Many individuals and teams associated with WRC have financially supported this project and helped make it happen.
The trophy is a bronze bust which has been created by the French artist François Chevalier well known for his painting and sculpture in the historic sport cars’ world (and also for his work as former director of the Paul Ricard Racing Circuit). It will be awarded at the end of each WRC season to the co-driver who has best shown the overall qualities associated with Michael through his sports results, general attitude, or a specific action.
A jury composed of WRC personalities (a retired professional co-driver, a member of an official team, a journalist, etc…) will be selected each year to select the prize winner.
For 2006, this jury was composed of:
They had to choose between six nominated co-drivers:
- Carlos DEL BARRIO (E)
- Daniel ELENA (MC)
- Jarmo LEHTINEN (FIN)
- Philip MILLS (GB)
- Ilka MINOR (A)
- Timo RAUTIAINEN (FIN)
We are pleased to announce that in 2006 Daniel ELENA has been chosen as the first winner of the Michael Park 'Beef' Trophy.
His achievements include:
- Loyal co-driver of Sébastien LOEB
- World Rally Champion for co-drivers in 2004, 2005 and 2006
- Has become the most successful co-driver in the history of the WRC with 28 victories to date
- Along with Sebastien Loeb they forfeited their win at the 2005 Wales Rally GB to avoid becoming World Rally Champions that fateful day
- Has always shown great modesty, good humour and respect for the sport and his colleagues.
The prize-giving of the Michael PARK 'Beef' Trophy to Daniel ELENA will take place on Friday December 1st in the Service Park at Swansea Felindre, around 16h45 / 17h00 at the Press Conference at the end of 1st leg of Wales Rally GB, in the presence of Michael's widow, Marie Park and his two children William and Victoria. Other members of Michael's immediate family, including brothers and sisters, along with other close friends will also attend.

Biography -
Michael Park
Ford Rallye Sport 2003 |
Date of birth: 22 June 1966
Lives: Hereford, England
Marital status: Married to Marie, son William, daughter Victoria
First rally: 1987
First world rally: 1994 RAC Rally
World rallies started: 41
World rally wins: 0
Having grown up in Englands rural Herefordshire, a part of the country
where the twisty country lanes were frequently used by small overnight
rallies, it seemed natural that Michael Park would gain an appetite for
rallying. After joining his local motor club, Beef, as he
is affectionately known, learned his trade as a navigator on those roads.
After three years spent gaining experience on local road and special stage
rallies with a variety of drivers, Park joined forces with Steve Bennett
to tackle Britains Peugeot Challenge series in 1990. They finished
second and mounted another determined challenge the following year, but
again had to settle for the runners-up spot beaten only by an improving
young driver called Richard Burns!
The duo tackled several European rallies in 1992 and Park also co-drove
for David Williams in a Ford Sierra Cosworth on Britains national
championship. The organisational skills required of a top-flight co-driver
were also being developed as a service co-ordinator for Williams
Genesis Sport team and Peugeot Talbot Sport on the 1992 RAC Rally.
In 1993, Park linked up with David Higgins and the pair won the Peugeot
Challenge, only to be excluded at the end of the season for a technical
irregularity. But their pace was rewarded with a works drive in a Peugeot
106 on the 1994 British Championship and they made the most of the opportunity
by securing a class win.
Park worked in the gravel note crew for Subaru driver Richard Burns on
several rounds of the 1994 Asia Pacific Championship and on three rounds
of the 1995 world championship. In competition he and Higgins joined Ford
and drove a works-prepared Escort RS2000 in the British Championship,
taking sixth place on the Scottish Rally.
Park maintained his gravel note relationship with Burns when he moved
to Mitsubishi in 1996. The pressures of rallying had become too much to
hold down a full-time job and in 1997 he left his job as a metal fabricator
to forge a full-time career in the sport, continuing his gravel note duties
for Burns until the end of 1998.
His big break came in 1999 when he partnered Abdullah
Bakhashab in a Toyota Corolla WRC. They tackled eight rounds of the world
championship in the FIA Teams Cup, ending the season in fourth.
But for 2000 Park joined up with Markko Märtin for a comprehensive world
championship programme in a Corolla, the highlight of which was sixth
place on the Cyprus Rally. The duo switched to Subaru for a limited world
championship programme in 2001 in an Impreza WRC but, disappointed at
not receiving a full programme, they moved to Ford for the 2002 campaign.
Park guided Märtin through a remarkably consistent year in a Focus RS
World Rally Car. The pair finished 12 of the 13 rounds they started and
scored points on eight of the last nine rounds, including a career-best
second on the final round of the championship in Great Britain.
A keen all-round sportsman, Park is an enthusiastic football and cricket
fan and enjoys shooting.
