PACE NOTES FOR A NEW EVENT - WRC MEXICO 2004

How do you make the pace notes?
Pace notes for an event are made during the recce when the drivers and co-drivers make two passes through the stages and speed is limited to a maximum of 90kph. During the first pass, Petter describes the road to me, including the road surface and every twist and turn, and I write his comments down in shorthand. During the second pass I read the notes back to Petter and he'll make any amendments he feels necessary.

Do all co-drivers make pace notes in the same way?
Yes, it's similar in the fact that we all have a book and write down how the driver sees the road, but all co-drivers have their own style. Shorthand techniques vary and while some will put eight lines on a page, some will put three. Could I read someone else's notes? Perhaps, co-drivers all use the same shorthand language and symbols, but you'd have to give me a few minutes to study it first!

Is there more work for a co-driver at a new event?
Yes. We didn't have any previous pace notes from any sections of the road and so I arrived with five new empty pace note books. I used to re-write all my notes in the evening after each day of the recce, but with the new format there's no time to do that so we're having to use our original recce notes for this event.

What differences will the new 2+3 format make to your job?
It's almost impossible to make any fresh notes in the evenings due to the shorter time scale. We're using the original corrected notes made during the recce for this event.

What's the best feature of Mexico?
It's an exciting country and a new challenge. Sebastien (Loeb) and Harri (Rovanpera) had been here before so they had a slight advantage at the start, knowing something about tyre wear and temperatures, but for us it was a bit of journey into the unknown.

PREVIOUS NEWS
1/9/00 Phil has sent us this email describing the rather big 'off' that he and Petter had on Rally Finland.
The accident was like most others really ie .it's over before you realise it's happened.

We came over a crest a little too fast and the road went very sharp to the left and normally it would be possible to get away with it but there was a very deep ditch on the outside and the wheel got into it and then threw us into the roll, a couple of bangs on the roof and then it was all over.

The car landed on its roof on the edge of a lake only 1 metre from the water and in fact 2 guys were spectating from their tiny fishing boat only another few metres away!

The car started up immediately and all wheels and geometry were fine except 3 trees had to be cut down before extracting the car otherwise we could have driven out of the stage!

Just bad luck really.

Go for it, lads!

Phil Mills is no stranger to success at the highest level but it was his move to the Subaru World Rally Team in August 2000, to partner Petter Solberg, that established the Welshman’s role in one of the most exciting driver partnerships in World Championship Rallying. After many promising results their potential was realised with their victory on last season’s Rally GB.

Back to basics

Like most British co-drivers, Phil started competing at the most basic level of the sport when, in 1983, he began co-driving on British road rallies with members of his local motor club. He learned quickly and in 1984 clinched his first class title on the Welsh Road Rally Championship. For the rest of the 1980s, Phil was a regular co-driver at club level, using the time to build his experience on a variety of different stage conditions. In the period between 1988 and 1990 he somehow managed to squeeze in 88 rallies!

Going international

Phil’s wealth of experience brought him his international break in the 1990 British Championship when he co-drove Graham Middleton to the Group N production car category and finished third overall on the Welsh Rally. Phil won the Welsh Championship in 1992 and 1993 with Brian Bell, and in 1993 joined Malcolm Wilson Motorsport to act as team co-ordinator on that year’s Rally GB. Phil then carried out gravel note duties for Malcolm Wilson when he won the British Championship in 1994, partnered Sebastian Lindholm in the British Championship and scored his first international success alongside multiple Middle East champion Mohammed Bin Sulayem in the Rally of Jordan.

British Championship success

Phil further added to his reputation as a co-driver in 1996 when he joined Mark Higgins at Nissan, finishing second in the British Championship and taking a superb fourth overall on the Rally GB. The duo went one better to win the British Championship in 1997 while the ever-busy Phil continued to carry out his co-ordination duties for M-Sport on the World and Middle East Championships and also found time to co-drive for Ford driver Armin Schwarz on the Corsica Rally.

Phil and Petter – a partnership is formed

Phil competed in five further World Championship events with Higgins during 1998, gaining more vital WRC experience, which was put to good use when he joined Petter Solberg at Ford in 1999. Mills' wealth of expertise proved a vital boost to the promising but inexperienced Norwegian driver, and in their first two years together they achieved a string of excellent results that established Petter as one of the sport’s most promising drivers for many years.

South to Subaru and WRC success

In August 2000 the Mills/Solberg partnership announced that it was leaving Ford’s Cumbria base and heading south to Banbury. The signing of Petter and Phil by Subaru was considered one of the most significant transfer deals in recent seasons. Phil’s steady head has been crucial in calming his exuberant driver and the duo were richly rewarded with a perfectly controlled second place in Greece the following season. Throughout 2002, Petter and Phil stood on the podium five times, that last being their first visit to the top step where they served a warning to the rest of the World that they intend to be up there many more times in the future.
