Nominations for Top Co-driver of 2002/3
.... the reasons why

<< Nominations Page 7 Award Winners >>
......  and some of the reasons why?
These are now in last-name alphabetical order
Trevor Agnew
Quality co-driver.. no other comment needed.

Mark Andrews
Mark is a brilliant all round co-driver. With him you get the whole package which other guys tend to be good at only 80% of the job. This also includes an assertive personality to control the mood swings of a driver and spotting when the driver needs to be calmed or angered - Mark and I work well in this region. He is also very good at not making the driver go to bed at 11 o'clock which, in our team, is very important to relax the night before and get good sleep without being up half the night with butterflies when the rally is very important from a championship point of view.

Simon Ashton
1.  When it comes to paper work and navigating and generally getting it right, he's your man.
2.  100% commitment.

Daniel Barritt
1.  He is the most up-and-coming young co-driver who is as 'professional as a veteran'.
2.  Daniel is an up-and-coming star!

Nicky Beech
The consummate pro. Has made Milner into a consistent driver and didn't get a note wrong all year. Top man. The second-most famous rally person from Wrexham!

Jonty Bolsover
Jonty has great experience, a natural map reader, almost photographic memory for roads and bends, can anticipate driver errors before they happen, very clear, and never makes mistakes.

Martin Brady
1.  Martin Brady has, over the past 2 years, approached the sport with a view to gaining maximum experience and learning from various different people the art of navigating. With his professional approach to events, before, during and after he is certainly one of the most up-and-coming guys.
2.
In the last 2 years Martin has gained a huge wealth of experience in navigating in any class of rally car.  His approach is professional to the last and his service management schedules and pacenotes are of an extremely high standard.  He has given rallying his all and commits more time to his hobby than his full time job!  His genuine passion for the sport and enthusiasm is infectious.  He is, in my view, one of the Irish co-driving scene's up-and-coming stars of the future.
3.  Martin is one of the up and coming - definitely one to watch in years to come.
4.  Determination! Determination! Determination!

Rachel Brockington
1.  Rachel (the wife) obviously had to be on the list otherwise I will be celibate for the next 12 months!
2.
She needs the votes to stop her hubby being celibate!
3.  Rachel (Steve's wife) had to be voted for or I, too, would be celibate for the next 12 months!

4.  Did the job!

Alan Carfrae
It takes a lot of nerve for an experienced rally driver like Alan to hand over the reigns to a young inexperienced novice like Matt Jessup (no offence Matt!!!) and sit in the co-driver's seat.  I'm sure Matt appreciates receiving the benefit of his years and years of experience - who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?  Let's hope we see the benefits in 2003.

Alan Clark
I think he is an awesome co-driver!!!!

Phil Clarke
I think has to be one of the best co-drivers in the country. Not just for his excellent map / pace note reading skills, but his ability to get more speed out of a driver.

Aled Davies
So cool, so professional, so consistent. He has once again achieved a number of top 3 results in different cars at different levels with different drivers, including Jon Mercer, Steve Hendy and Garth Lloyd. This demonstrates, once again, his ability to get the best out of the driver / car combination.

Elgan Davies
Gets the vote due to him and his driver Huw Jeffreys putting me in their hotel at the West Cork rally at short notice (1 hr) and getting me paralytic drunk!

Kurt DeClerck (B)
Kurt is completely mad!

Killian Duffy
Killian is just 20 years old and navigates in an Evo 5 with Derrick Jobb. In 2002 the pair won Group N in the Border Championship. He has competed in numerous National Championship events as well as competing in forestry events in both Northern Ireland and Scotland. He has also co-driven in 2002 in Subarus with Cork's John O'Leary and Dublin's George Treacy. In addition to this, he navigated with up and coming young drivers Brendan Cumiskey and Eugene Meegan in a Civic and Peugeot 106 respectively. At just 17 years of age, he guided the overall Border Champion to victory and in 2002 consolidated his position as one of the most talented and sought-after co-drivers.

Richard Edwards
1.  Fantastic co-driver.  Rich got me started on the sport.
2.  Great to see Richard getting the results that it has taken so long to get. Really feel this will give him the confidence to go on and get better and better.

Daniel Elena
For proving that he's not just Seb's buddy.

Tero Gardemeister
Tero was big help for Jussi to get familiar with World Rally events. They did at least something right because of their deal with Hyundai World Rally team.

Michael Gibson
110% dedication to the sport.

Anthony Giles
AKA Tony or the Watcher (like GILES from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) co-driver for Clarke Burr.  Watch this space for the slaying duo.

Nicky Grist
1.  For having the balls to stay with McRae as long as he did.
2.  Coz he's Welsh!!
3.  Nicky the peanut deserves a medal.
4.  Took guts (or foolishness?) to sit beside someone who obviously only listens to what he wants to hear - and last year that wasn't his own pacenotes!!!
5.  For putting up with more than crashes.
6.  All that I would like to say is that Nicky Grist and Colin McRae should not have parted - I would love to see them in the same car again.....
7.
Nicky is a real talent.

Gareth Hall
1.  I have chosen Gareth for his dedication and as a tribute to his life.
2.  An outstanding young talent tragically taken away. What would this young `Gentleman` have gone on to?..... Deeply missed.
3.  Young, outstanding prospect, tragically no longer with us.
4.  Fondly remembered and fitting if he were to win this award.
5.  This young lad had the potential to go all the way. First & foremost he never forgot that you go rallying for fun.  He could always be relied on for a smile and a joke.
6.  A great co-driver on the verge of really getting noticed for his effort, dedication and skill. Going on to who knows where.......a very sad loss.
And a nicer person you could not wish to meet.
7.  Locally we always knew that Gareth was an underestimated and capable navigator. Last years' results with Dorian Rees showed how capable he was; not a scratch on the car in 15 rallies, with some superb results. Also equally as happy to be marshalling for/helping his mates on road rallies, autotests, etc, when not competing - something very rare these days. Tragically, we will never know his true potential, but without doubt this co-driver would have won many more awards, and probably gained some more top results. Badly missed by all who knew him locally.
8.  First rally together - quote from Gareth, "Let's see who craps themselves first!" We both fell about laughing, and enjoyed our rallying together, always with time for a laugh and a pint. The best co-driver who I had the privilege of knowing. Very sadly missed.
9.  Gareth helped Dorian Rees to gain that extra speed and bring home the results.  A sad loss.
10.  A very talented young navigator who would have gone on to great things. Him and Dorian Rees were, in my mind, the stars of last year. A very sad loss.
11.  The best lad ever.
12.  To anyone that ever met this fine young gentleman, this would be their only nomination.  Deeply missed by everyone.
13.  Always in our memories.
14.  Will always be missed............
15.  Gareth hall was an extraordinary young gentleman with impeccable manners.  He also had a wicked sense of humour. The best tribute that I could pay in his memory is, I hope my sons grow up to be half as nice as him.
16.  Talented young navigator... top man.
17.  What more can I say, being his Dad?
18.  His and Dorian Rees' results speak for themselves. Gareth was one half of the best clubman team of last year. No matter what was thrown at them they came back stronger and still smiling. He was one of the service area characters; always time for a chat and a joke. He would have added many more trophies to his growing collection without a doubt.
19.  You were the best, and still are!
20.  You will be sadly missed - the best guy you could wish to meet.
21.  Nice, kind gentleman, sadly missed, always up for a laugh and a joke.  Top man!
22. He always had time to talk to me, even though I was 13 years younger than him. Thank you, Gareth.  I will always remember you.
23.  Like the previous comment from my younger brother, you always had time to talk to me, although I was younger.  This didn't seem to matter to you. My ambition is to be a navigator and I will compete in your memory and win. God bless and sleep tight.
24.  Words are never enough to express your feelings but in Gareth's case the memories will never fade.

Gary Hall
1.  Young & enthusiastic. He has a great dedication to navigating & has already won a navigation trial & numerous class wins. He navigated Trevor Lancashire to an overall win in Kilbroney, on their 1st attempt. He's not long at the game, but will go far, if he continues as he has done. Achieved a lot in a short space of time. TIP: one to look for in the future!
2.  Keep the small man popular.
3.  If there was a fund set up for young navigators, like the Billy Coleman for young drivers, then Gary would be an obvious candidate.

Noel Hall
1.  I don't think Irish Navigators get enough spotlight. Noel has navigated a 'Pinto' to several top 15 finishes in National Irish rallies, & a few top tens. He's the current Border champion. He has won several night navigation rallies, as well as a few single stage rallies. He may not have the money to rally worldwide, but in Ireland he's achieved all he can afford to achieve. He deserves a vote!
2.  Best in Ireland.
3.  Known all over the country for his argumentative skills!! He doesn't like to give in easily, & was born to be a winner. He navigated Ual Williamson to a top 15 finish in Donegal International in 92 (I think), in a Mk 1. After a few rallies with Bosco McGorman, Noel McCarrick, & many others, he tried his hand at driving. He quit driving to team up with Trevor Lancashire & between them, they have dominated class 12 in any event they do. He is being robbed of his talents, by the price of entry fees.
4.  Great ambassador for the sport. A lot achieved, a lot more to achieve.
5.  An obvious choice.
6.  One of the best in Ireland! He won the Traders Trophy three years running which proves he has talent.

Paul Heath
I'd like to nominate my co-driver, Paul Heath. He's organised, hard-working, cheerful, professional, fearless (or appears to be!), and generally the glue that holds the team together..... but maybe I'm biased, because I'm married to him!

Roger Herron
Can you believe he's only 21?!  I can't believe he was dumped by Wilks. Well, all I can say is that it'll be his loss!

Susan Hopcraft (née North)
Susan is in her first year of co-driving and won the closest fought championship in the UK - the BTRDA 1400. She also married the driver halfway through the season!

Graham Hopewell
1.  Graham is a co-driver who tried very hard last year and only missed out on winning the BTRDA Gold Star Championship because he had to be Clerk of the Course on one of the rounds.
2.  Graham sacrificed the BTRDA Gold Star Championship title to continue as Deputy C of C of the Woodpecker.

Paul Hudson (Rocky)
1.  Considering his latest project - taking on a complete novice - he has not half done bad!
2.  Always stands by and defends his driver.

Clive Jenkins
Clive is a top co-driver and a top person with it. So down to earth, deserves a very good year in the JWRC.

Vicky Johnson
Fantastic co-driver.  Vicky is great with organising and pulling the rally together!

Jakes Kelly
Have to vote for Jakes as I work with him and I know the amount of time and effort he puts into his rallying!

Francis Kenny
Francis is an experienced co-driver who has competed in the Irish National Championship many times in Group N and WRC machinery and is set for an assault on the Get Connected Championship this year. Whenever advice is needed, both in running events and helping young co-drivers, Francis will be always on hand to offer his services. You could call him the match-maker, because of all the top class seats he has got for young co-drivers!!

Martin McGarrity
The quiet unassuming lad lives for rallying and his determination paid off in 2002 when he won his class in the Irish National Tarmac and Border Championships along with the Northern Ireland Series.

Duncan McMath
He's just sooooooo good!

Alyson Marlow
Aly helped me with more confidence and experience.  Fantastic co-driver.

Kisitu Mayanja (UG)
For bending every rule in the book!

Esko Mertsalmi (F)
Esko helped Juuso the best way he could, i.e. very impressive few special stage times in Rally Finland. Beginning of the year no one could beat them in Finnish Championship, a result of this is three years Peugeot WRC-deal.

Phil Mills
1.  What determination this guy has. Unbelievable. Yet though with his hectic lifestyle he still finds time to help as many people as he can. Top man.
2.  Remember him looking embarrassed at holding his arms aloft winning the Rally of Wales (1st International win) - hasn't he come on...?
3.  Phil Mills has to be the most genuine and nicest person I've met in this sport. What a great talent he has!
4.  Phil is a professional but he is always approachable. A really nice guy.
5.  Because he is bloody good!
6.  His first WRC win on home soil must have been the buzz of a lifetime.

Claire Mole
1.  Very good and the right sense of humour!
2.  Having worked with some of the world's best co-drivers, I can honestly say that Claire is by far the most professional, organised and committed, who never gives up, never loses her sense of humour - despite having worked with some pretty amateur set-ups - and always gives 100%. She's also a really, really nice person and deserves a crack at the World Championship

Andy Morgan
Anyone that can keep Mad Mick Jones, and his son, on the road gets my vote!!

Luis Moya
The best!

Abed Musa (UG)
For being the coolest co-driver in the history of Uganda rallying.

Eddie Myatt
As a co-driver returning to driving again I am in a stronger position than most to spot the best points in others. Eddie is a quietly determined, seriously competent guy with such a positive outlook who is unfazed by nothing – and is so damned good on maps! If I do well this year he will have a lot to do with it.

Paul Nagle
1.  My vote for Paul is due to his potential for TV stardom...now that we have lost Luis Moya from our TV screens, Paul has by far the most entertaining style of pace note delivery...and, unlike Luis, I can understand what he's saying.
2.  Paul Nagle should be top co-driver this year. He performed and gave great results all through last year.
3.  Paul is a top navigator. After all the results he got this year and all he put in he deserves to be the top co-driver. He's got a very bright future in this sport.

James O'Brien
James deserves this because he has kept Nesbitt under control all season!!!!!

Shaun O'Gorman
Shaun loves rallying and has enjoyed being in the sport for many years and, like any navigator, still dreams of being up there with fellow Welshmen Nicky and Phil.

Robert Paisley (ZA)
1.  For finding the time to keep record of other time cards.
2.  Robert not only clinched the African Championship but also sat in the hot seat successfully for drivers other than his regular Johnny Gemmel.

Richard Pashley
1.
He's a natural.  His map-reading skills have to be seen to be believed and he's so organised - every detail of every event is sorted.
2.  Admire him for giving up his home/job/and everything else to chase his dream. Made it to JWRC so lady luck smiled on him too.
3.  It's about time he was recognised for the skill and passion he has for the sport, all of which he has learned by hard graft.
4.  Very committed and professional - will go a long way.
5.  I like his style.
6.  Amazing skid marks (not underpants!).
7.  A lotta drive from this one.. watch out for him in the future.. he's going places..
8.  First class co-driver.
9.  Richard should be in a works team. His professional attitude and competence make him an asset to any professional team.

James Phillips
The only person I've ever had next to me who has started compiling an invoice for damaged parts DURING A STAGE !!

Gemma Price
1..Nice to see a young lady doing so well.. All the best for WRC 2003!
2.  Only 21, organised, extremely talented.....and shows that she can beat the boys! My idol at the moment!

Timo Rautiainen (F)
Timo has continued improving together with Marcus. Their success during the whole season was breathtaking!

Robert Reid
1.  Because he is bloody good!
2.  I think Robert Reid is the best co-driver of the World!
3.  I am going to get engaged to Robert, he is a very conscientious co-driver indeed.

John Richardson
1.  Only a 'rally widow' like me knows the true commitment of a 'top co-driver'!!!
2.  Just how long has this guy been around?!  Hee hee

Derek Ringer
Always sounds unbelievably relaxed when sat next to Mad McRae.

Shelley Rogerson
Tiny lass with no budget but a big dollop of determination to succeed. Not every co-driver I know could finish a Wyedean in a tree, be taken to hospital with a neck injury, yet do another event the next day!

Bob Rose
1.  All Bob needs is the invite to a works team.
2.  Works harder than any other guy. Why aren't the works teams knocking on his door?
3.  Bob commits himself 110% to every aspect of rallying.
4.  We have followed Bob's progress for a number of years and we, as keen members of a club who marshal on numerous events throughout the UK, have never, ever met a nicer co-driver than Bob; he is always polite and always gives the time crews a laugh and a smile whatever the weather conditions are.  Keep it up Bob!! (an event time keeper).
5.
Bob is the most helpful co-driver I know and is so enthusiastic about rallying.  I am sure if he did more rallying he wouldn't need to smoke!  How many other co-drivers are out there that go and marshal on rallies?
6.  I chose Bob first as he is so committed to the sport.
7.  Bob is totally professional and committed to doing a good job. Top man, very relaxed and not easily flustered.

Neil Shanks
Glad to see his hard work has been rewarded with a S1600 drive. Well done to Barry as well!

John Skinner
John has has made a great comeback after almost twenty years in the Kumho Championship.

Richard Skinner
1.  Richard has worked away in 2002 helping younger drivers in the Isle of Man.
2.  Richard managed to keep me under control on the ANCRO Clubmans championship last year.  Would be a hard act to follow!

Steve Smith (NZ)
He has had a very successful rally career, from rallying with Peter Day to with Geof Argyle. He is a legend!

Colin Steer
Colin was my co-driver and only got one split wrong (in 2001).

Tim Sturla
1.  Very professional and methodical. Good pace note delivery.  Good judge of pace.
2.  His note delivery is superb, timing impeccable, very perceptive & precise.
He costs - but it's good value, has pushed my driving on a lot.

Ieuan Thomas
Totally professional, made a real difference to Martin Sansom and Julian Reynolds. One for the very top!

Helen Tooley
She is a brave girl sitting in a Lex Army Land Rover for a full season!

Petri Vihavainen (F)
Petri put full effort to reach JWRC-medal with Janne. They got it and also made some very impressive special stage times in Swedish Rally.

Patrick Walsh
1.  I have chosen Patrick as my number one co-driver as he is an excellent navigator in all fields of rallying, whether it is road rallying, forestry or stages. He dedicates his life to his motorsport.
2.  Patrick Walsh is a devoted co-driver who has won so many events and trophies and deserves recognition for his achievements. Well done, boyo.
3.  He deserves some recognition for all the trophies he has won and for being able to sit in the same car as Huw (Joppa) Evans and still come out with clean pants!
4.  He h
as such a cool-headed, well-organised approach. He never gets scared or panics not matter how big or serious the moment is.
5.  Looks like the Welsh boys are kicking the English boys' asses when it comes to top co-drivers. Just take Pat Walsh for example - he's dedicated, loyal, professional and a genius in at navigating. He deserves another medal for his achievements.
6.  Patrick Walsh is the keenest most able co-driver I have heard of. I can't wait to meet the bloke. He sounds like a star man. I love to read his reports on rallycodriver and in the motorsport news. All the Welsh boys are great.
7.  I'm Patrick's lucky charm!! I go and watch all his rallies and I cheer for him louder than anyone! Is he attached? I've nominated all the other boys because they're Welsh!  English boys don't know their left from their right.

Rhydian Welson
On the Ulster ’98 I had not even thought about the ‘Alternative road book’ and how alternative timing worked in the event of a stage cancellation. Rhydian quietly and helpfully took it upon himself to explain it to me. A professional outlook.

Michael Wilkinson
A genuine guy.

Carl Williamson
1.  He is so dedicated to the sport. He has so much experience in all types of rallying by being there all the time and he is always willing to jump in whether it is one of the leading drivers or someone just starting out. With his very calming personality he is always a joy to have around the team. His involvement with Jari-Matti Latvala has not been down to luck but to sheer hard work and commitment.  Good luck to him in 2003 - they are future World Champions.
2.  Will become a great star. Good luck, Carl!
3.  Watched this young man over many years overcome a lot of difficulties in this very competitive sport (just for co-drivers, never mind the events) and always come out the other end at the top. His first pairing was very successful and helped Carl grow greatly towards the top of the field where he currently resides!
4.  Very talented young man, is not too big-headed to sit next to a novice and help them with their ambitions! Has worked very hard to get to where he is and I think he will be a big influence in Jari-Matti's success. A good word should be put forward also for a very supporting wife.
5.  Because he has raw talent that can't be taught, although that was harnessed by his first driver!!  He came through the ranks to where he is today based on his talent, without the help of money or "who you know", and still goes back to his roots and competes!
6.  Very talented co-driver and has realistic view on today's sport on what it needs and what it takes to succeed! This boy out-shines a lot of the top co-drivers in the world and will have a few people worried in the WRC scene!

Ian Windress
I am surprised no one in WRC has spotted this talented young navigator.

Carl-Johan Wolff (F)
Carl-Johan did marvellous job with rookie Ville-Pertti Teuronen in Finnish Championship.  They participated six events, won four of them and retired twice because of technical failure.

and.......

Non WRC-co-drivers
All the WRC co-drivers have already made it - these 5 are the co-drivers I feel are putting everything they can give to the sport, from road rallies to stage events throughout Europe - top 5 in the UK

Neil Dashfield, Jonty Bolsover, Gordon Noble, Andrew Bargery, Phil Mills
It was very difficult to put these names in a descending order. I have competed against all of these guys during the last seven years and found them all to be great ambassadors for the sport. I was always able to seek their advice, even though on many occasions they were my main rivals. They all know how to enjoy their sport without it detracting from their excellent performances. Good luck to them all in 2003.

Robert Reid, Derek Ringer, Nicky Grist, Herve Panizzi, Howard Davies
All of the above have put something back into rallying and I believe that is a great thing to do.

Timo Rautiainen, Phil Mills, Nicky Beech, Rory Kennedy, James O'Brien
Just some of the best co-drivers from the WRC, British and Irish Tarmac Championships - all good men to look up to for young co-drivers starting in the sport.

Peter Carstairs, Anne Wood, Derek Ringer, Robert Reid, Heather Connon
They're all from my country, Scotland

Paul Spooner, John Skinner, Dan Barritt, Ieuan Thomas, Nicky Beech
The first two have been a great help to me in my career so far, offering advice whenever needed!!  Dan, Ieuan & Nicky are all top class co-drivers and have formed excellent partnerships with their respective drivers.

Jude Wylie, Bruce Harper, Roy Campbell, Neil Ewing, Anne Wood
Having seen them all in action on Saturday's Snowman Rally, in my opinion, they deserve medals for their sheer bravery! These 5 cars were the most spectacular on the stage I was at.......and Jude, you are so tiny I thought Barry G was alone in the car!

John Richardson, Neil Shanks, , Peter Croft, Neil Dashfield, Larry Carter
I have voted for these co-drivers not only because of their outstanding ability but also because of their personalities, as I believe this is a big part of co-driving.

final updates 28/2/03

Email from a delighted co-driver
Been onto your superb web page to vote for my Top Co-driver of 2002/3 and found that someone has nominated me! (Been really fed up with a streaming cold but that cheered me up no end!  I'm honoured to see my name on a list like that...)

17/1/03

And a note from another proud co-driver
Just a quick note to say thanks so much for the excellent co-driver vote.  I logged on to your excellent site one day (as I do every day) for news and I was, in short, bowled over to see my name as a nominee on the same page as heroes of mine such as N Grist as well as other excellent role models such as Jonty, Gordy Noble, James O'Brien, Howard Davies - not to mention a WRC co-driver such as Phil Mills.

It was an honour, a privilege and the most humbling yet proud-filled moment of 03 for me to see my name in print up there and also to see the kind comment which you so kindly posted for all to see. Thanks again to all at rallycodriver for putting my name on display.

If I do no rallying for the rest of the year I will be smiling to myself on the strength of being nominated in your contest!!

31/1/03

Someone else is pleased!
What a pleasant surprise I had when I took a look at the list of names and found myself on there. Some mad fool voted for me!!

8/2/03

And another is amazed at being included
Well, what can I say? I do not believe that I should be there.

There are some great people listed there - Mills/Thomas/Williamson, etc. but I have only done 12 rallies in four years and am very rusty!

Great fun, this page, and I hope the right person wins.   All listed are champions in my mind.

8/2/03

Thrilled to bits
I'm thrilled to bits that I have got more than 1 nomination on the top co-driver voting, and mentioned in the same sentence as very famous people.
